CHANDIGARH: Punjab SP (Intelligence) SPS Basra has landed in trouble. The State Human Rights Commission (PSHRC) has ordered a probe against him for allegedly harassing and issuing life threats to freedom fighter Dev Raj Vasisht's widow Satya Devi, a resident of Kishangarh here.
Taking serious cognisance of a complaint from 70-year-old Satya Devi, PSHRC bench comprising acting chairperson Justice R L Anand and member BC Rajput ordered that Punjab ADGP (Human Rights) get the matter probed through ADGP (Crime) before the next hearing on July 10.

In her complaint, Satya Devi said a Punjab police inspector Dharam Parkash Thakur and his daughter Meena Devi owed Rs 5.72 lakh to her family. While Meena issued cheques in the name of Satya Devi's son Vishal Vasisht, the negotiable instrument bounced at the bank and the cheques were dishonoured.
A criminal case against Meena Devi was filed before the Chandigarh chief judicial magistrate and she was convicted in the case. However, there were other bounced cheques for which criminal action were initiated against Meena.
Meanwhile, due to Dharam Parkash's proximity to SP (Intelligence) SPS Basra, the two police officers started harassing Satya Devi and family coercing them to withdraw the criminal cases against Meena, the complaint said.
Basra sent two police personnel were sent to her house several times and on occasions at late hours to threaten her family with dire consequences if the cases were not withdrawn, she claimed.
Another reason for the threats and harassment was the failed marriage proposal between Vishal and Meena, which did not materialise due to unavoidable circumstances.
Due to the threats and harassment, Satya Devi claimed that she feared that SPS Basra and others, named as respondents in the complaint, could harm her and her family.
